LinkedIn Lead Generation for Commercial Solar Installers

Short answer: LinkedIn lets a commercial solar installer find the owners, finance directors, facilities managers and landlords who decide on solar and start real conversations with them. It works when someone credible spends a few hours every week targeting tightly, writing short messages by hand and moving warm chats to a call, then a site survey. It is not a mass-messaging channel: LinkedIn bans the automation tools that try.

Who LinkedIn suits (and who it does not)

LinkedIn prospecting tends to suit installers who:

    • Have a founder or senior salesperson happy to be the face of the business, every week.
    • Have finished commercial jobs they can show, with the customer's permission.
    • Target a clear patch or sector, not "any UK business".
    • Will pick up the phone once a chat is warm.

It is a weaker fit if:

    • Nobody can protect the hours. Bursts of activity undo most of the work.
    • You need surveys this month. LinkedIn is slow-burn for commercial work.
    • Your buyers rarely use LinkedIn. Phone may reach them faster; see our guide to cold calling commercial solar prospects.

    Who to target

Commercial solar usually has more than one decision-maker. Map the roles before you search:

RoleWhy they matterWhat they care about
Owner, MD or finance directorSigns off the spend and sees the billPayback, cash flow, finance
Operations or production directorRuns the daytime load solar offsetsUptime and disruption
Facilities or estates managerKnows the roof, meters and leaseRoof condition, warranties, access
Landlord or property managerControls the roof on let buildingsRental value, tenants, lease terms
Farm, warehouse or logistics ownerBig roofs or land, steady daytime useCold stores, chargers, ground mounts

Start from sites: a big roof and daytime use. The UK commercial solar market in numbers shows where the volume is; public buyers often use commercial solar tenders and frameworks instead.

    Set up your profile

Prospects check your profile before they accept, so write it for people who run commercial buildings.

    • Photo and headline: an up-to-date photo (LinkedIn's own advice) and a headline saying who you help: "Commercial solar for farms and factories in the North West", not "Director".
    • About: who you work with, what a project looks like from first call to switch-on, how to get in touch.
    • Featured: two or three of your own case studies, each with a site photo and the customer's goal.

    Free LinkedIn vs Sales Navigator

You can start free. Sales Navigator is LinkedIn's paid prospecting tool; figures below are from LinkedIn's own pages.

    Free LinkedInSales Navigator
Price (LinkedIn UK, 7 Oct 2026)£0Core £94.99/month or £959.88/year; Advanced £130.00/month or £1,499.88/year; Advanced Plus on request. May exclude VAT.

MessagingMessage your connectionsPlus 50 InMail credits a month on every plan, to reach people you are not connected to

Prove you can keep up the routine on the free account, then try Sales Navigator once your lists outgrow basic search. Paying does not lift LinkedIn's rules on invitations or automation.

    Build your lists

    1. Pick one patch and two or three sectors you can survey quickly.
    2. Search companies first by location, industry and headcount, then check the roof on a satellite map.
    3. Then find two people per site: the decision-maker and the person who knows the building.
    4. Record each one in a CRM: site, contact, role, last message, next step.
    5. Do not scrape. LinkedIn's User Agreement bans software that scrapes the service, and UK GDPR still applies (below).

    Connection requests and messages

LinkedIn advises explaining why you want to connect, and its Professional Community Policies say not to use invitations to send promotional messages to people you don't know. So the request is a reason to connect, never a pitch. Free accounts can add a note to three requests a month (up to 200 characters each); Premium members can personalise every one. The examples are illustrations, not tested scripts.

Example connection note (fictional names, keep it short)
Sarah, I saw Brookfield has just opened the second cold store at Leyland. We fit solar on food and cold storage sites around Lancashire and I'd like to follow what you're doing.
Example first message, a few days after they accept (fictional)
Sarah, thanks for connecting. With two cold stores running all day at Leyland, electricity must be one of the bigger bills. We can put together a simple view of what solar on a roof like yours could take off it. Want me to show you what the numbers look like?
Example follow-up, a week later if there is no reply (fictional)
Sarah, one more thought on the Leyland site: if the building is leased, that does not rule solar out, it just changes who signs off. Is that something worth a quick look?

The pattern: the first line is about their site, one question, no figures or promises, a small ask. Two follow-ups with no reply is enough, and anyone who says stop gets nothing further. For the email side, see our guide to cold email for commercial solar.

    Content that earns replies

The people you message look at your recent posts. What tends to work for installers:

    • Short case studies of your own jobs with a site photo, with the customer's permission.
    • Site photos with a lesson: a roof you turned down and why.
    • Plain answers to buyer questions: "Can a tenant have solar?"
    • Savings framed honestly: real figures only with evidence, otherwise ranges and assumptions.

The ASA's remit covers selling messages in online space you control, such as your own social media, and CAP Code rule 3.7 requires documentary evidence for objective claims. A savings percentage with nothing behind it is a risk.

Paid ads are a separate route. LinkedIn's Lead Gen Forms come pre-filled with profile data, so enquiries are easy to send; qualify them by phone before anyone visits a site.

From chat to call to site survey

The thread's only job is to get a call. When someone is interested, suggest 15 minutes on the phone, qualify, ask for a recent bill and book the survey with the decision-maker present. Ask:

    QuestionRed flag
Do you own the building, or lease it?"We are tenants, the lease is up next year"
Roughly what is your electricity spend, and is it mostly daytime?Mostly night-time use, or a very small bill
How old is the roof? Any spare land?End-of-life roof with no budget to fix it
Who else would sign this off?"Head office decides" with no name
What made you look at this now?"Just gathering prices for next year"

Our checklist on how to qualify commercial solar leads goes further. Track every stage, from invitation to signed, and the free lead calculator turns your rates into the activity your install target needs.

    LinkedIn's limits and rules

    • Invitation limits: LinkedIn says every member, Basic or Premium, is subject to invitation limits, and that reaching one can restrict you from sending invitations, typically for one week. Its help page gives no fixed number.
    • No automation: the User Agreement (section 8.2) prohibits bots and other unauthorised automated methods to add contacts or send messages, and scraping software. Members using prohibited software risk having their accounts restricted or shut down.
    • No spam: the Professional Community Policies rule out untargeted, irrelevant or repetitive promotional messages.

UK data rules for B2B outreach

From the ICO's guidance on business-to-business marketing (this is a summary, not legal advice; the ICO says the guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act):

    • UK GDPR applies to business contacts' personal data; public data is not consent to marketing.
    • Where PECR does not require consent, legitimate interests is in many cases likely to be the appropriate lawful basis. Tell people how you use their data, within a month if you got it elsewhere.
    • PECR's definition of electronic mail covers direct messages on social media.
    • Companies and LLPs are corporate subscribers; sole traders and some partnerships are treated like individuals, with stricter rules on electronic marketing. Check how a farm or family business is set up.
    • People often use professional networking sites in a personal, if professional, capacity; then a marketing message to them is not B2B marketing.
    • The right to object to direct marketing is absolute. If someone says stop, stop.

In practice: target businesses, stay relevant to their site, start conversations rather than pitches, keep records, and take advice before anything at scale.

    What it really takes

    What to expect
Hours per weekSeveral hours a week, every week: searching, inviting, replying, posting and following up.
Who does itUsually the founder or a senior salesperson: prospects want someone credible.
SkillsShort, specific writing; enough solar knowledge to answer questions; phone skills; disciplined follow-up.
ToolsLinkedIn (free to start); Sales Navigator Core at £94.99/month or £959.88/year (LinkedIn UK pricing, 7 Oct 2026, may exclude VAT); a CRM or spreadsheet.
Data costsLinkedIn is the data; look-up tools cost extra.
Time before the first booked surveyWeeks to months: people must accept, conversations warm up, decisions take time.
Ongoing managementWeekly: answer replies fast, post, review which roles reply, update the CRM.

Value the founder's hours before deciding. Our breakdown of what commercial solar leads really cost shows how to compare your own time with buying meetings.

    Where it usually goes wrong

    • Pitching in the connection request. It reads as spam and LinkedIn's policies say so.
    • Targeting job titles, not sites. A perfect contact with a small, shaded roof is wasted effort.
    • Automation tools. Against the User Agreement, and risk the account.
    • Stopping after a month. Commercial buyers move slowly; consistency beats bursts.
    • Staying in the chat instead of asking for a call.
    • Booking surveys unqualified. A tenant with a year left on the lease is a wasted day.
    • Unsupported savings claims. See rule 3.7.

Doing LinkedIn yourself is the right call if you have a credible person with protected hours every week, a patch you know well and patience. It is the wrong call if those hours would otherwise go on surveys and selling, or you need site meetings soon. Then pay-per-appointment commercial solar leads make more sense: TNW Marketing uses LinkedIn alongside outbound calling, email and paid ads, and you pay only for qualified meetings that happen, with no retainer and no minimum spend. LinkedIn lead generation FAQ

Does LinkedIn work for commercial solar lead generation?

It can. Owners, finance directors, facilities managers and landlords can be found by job title, sector and location. It works as a steady, personal channel alongside phone and email, not a numbers game.

    Do I need Sales Navigator?

Not to start. Sales Navigator includes 50+ advanced search filters, alerts on job changes and 50 InMail credits a month. LinkedIn’s UK price on 7 October 2026 was £94.99 a month (£959.88 a year) for Core, and it notes prices may exclude VAT.

How many connection requests can I send?

LinkedIn’s help page gives no fixed number. It says every member, free or Premium, is subject to invitation limits, and hitting one can restrict you from sending invitations, typically for a week.

Can I use automation tools to send LinkedIn messages?

No. LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits bots and unauthorised automated methods for adding contacts or sending messages, and accounts using prohibited software risk being restricted or shut down.

Is it legal to message business prospects on LinkedIn in the UK?

Business outreach is allowed, but the rules apply. The ICO says UK GDPR covers business contacts’ personal data, social media direct messages fall within PECR’s definition of electronic mail, and sole traders and some partnerships are treated like individuals. This is not legal advice.

Is it better to do LinkedIn myself or have meetings booked for me?

If a credible person has protected hours every week, do it yourself. If your team would rather survey and sell, TNW Marketing books qualified, exclusive site meetings, paid per attended appointment.
